Next conference in Cardiff, Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th April 2022

The conference will include the ever popular depot visit – this time to Cardiff Bus – the return of the YBMN Dragons’ Den looking at The Road to Net Zero, and a line up of top industry speakers, including:
after dinner speaker James Price, Chief Executive at Transport for Wales,
keynote speaker Carla Stockton-Jones, Stagecoach UK Bus Managing Director, and
design guru Ray Stenning of Best Impressions.
There will also be two short presentations from fellow YBMN members; Matt Harrison from Go North West, and Rachel Perkins from Bluestar & Unilink.

The optional Wednesday afternoon depot visit will be to Cardiff Bus. Delegates will be able to see the new charging and maintenance infrastructure needed to operate the company’s fleet of 36 Yutong E12 electric buses, which came into service in January. Split into three groups, there will also be a tour of Cardiff en-route to the depot and a presentation about Cardiff Bus as well as a tour of the depot facilities.

Wednesday evening will see the conference dinner with guest speaker James Price from Transport for Wales. James headed up the organisation during its start up phase becoming Chief Executive in 2018.

Thursday morning kicks off with keynote speaker Carla Stockton-Jones, Stagecoach UK Bus Managing Director. Carla joined Stagecoach in early 2020 as Regional Director for the South of England, having previously held senior positions at Sky. She took up her current role in October last year and is the first woman to head a major UK transport operator.

Demand Responsive Transport is appearing in various forms around the UK. Transport for Wales partners with local authorities and bus operators to deliver its fflecsi services throughout Wales. We’ll hear how fflecsi was developed and how it works for an operator from Stagecoach South Wales’ Head of Commercial Christian Reed

The YBMN Dragons’ Den looks at The Road to Net Zero. Delegates will be split into groups to present on various aspects of the topic in front of five ‘dragons’:
  Margaret Everson MBE FCILT
Bev Fowles, MD, South Wales Transport
Martijn Gilbert, MD, Go North East
  Alex Hornby, CEO, Transdev Blazefield
  Andrew Sherrington,
Head of Network & Service Design, Transport for Wales

In the afternoon we’ll hear from design guru Ray Stenning. Often described as colourful, charismatic, outspoken, a bit outrageous and rather unconventional, Ray has probably designed more bus, coach and rail livery than anyone else in the world. His company Best Impressions is renowned for raising the bar and changing how public transport is presented, perceived and sold. Ray’s presentations are always lively and thought provoking.

The conference will be held at the Holiday Inn Cardiff City Centre, a 10 minute walk from Cardiff Central railway station, and under 10 minutes walk from the coach station (see detailed information below). Some bedrooms may be available for early check in on Wednesday, otherwise delegates can store bags in reception if bedrooms are not ready. A conference registration desk will be open from 1300-1430 and again from 1900 until dinner at 1930. A light lunch of sandwiches and soft drinks will be available from 1300.

How to get to the Holiday Inn

By Train

There are frequent rail services from most regions of Great Britain to Cardiff Central station. It’s a ten minute walk from the station to the hotel. Exit the station into Central Square. Opposite the station ahead of you is the BBC Cymru Wales. Walk across the square and to the right hand side of the BBC building. Keep walking ahead, passing the BBC building on your left until you reach a pedestrian crossing. Cross the road and walk to the right of the blue glass Wales Government building in Havelock Street. Follow Havelock Street as it turns to the right and becomes Park Street, and to the end and the T-junction with Westgate Street. Turn left into Westgate Street, staying on the left hand side of the road, and walk to the end. You’ll pass the Principality Stadium and Cardiff Arms Park on your left. At the end of Westgate Street at it’s junction with Castle Street, look the the left and you’ll see the Holiday just ahead of you.

By Express Coach

National Express runs coach services to Cardiff Coach Station, about seven minutes walk from the hotel. From where the coach stops, either walk on the path beside the River Taff, keeping the river on your left, or walk along the road in the park in the same direction and through the pedestrian gate onto Castle Street. Turn left and walk over the road bridge to the pedestrian crossing. You’ll see the Holiday Inn across the road to the left.
Megabus stops on Duke Street from where you should be able to see the castle wall. Keep the wall on your right and walk along Duke Street, around the corner to the right, and keep walking. By the time you get to the entrance to Cardiff Castle you’ll be able to see the Holiday Inn ahead of you on the other side of the road. The walking time is 10 to 15 minutes, depending in exactly where the coach stops.
FlixBus stops near the front of Cardiff City Hall. Keeping the city hall on your right, walk straight ahead until you get to get to the castle wall, then turn left. Keeping the castle wall on your right, follow the road and by the time you get to the entrance to Cardiff Castle, you’ll see the Holiday Inn ahead and on the left. It’s about 15 minutes walk to the hotel.

By Air

There is a 905 shuttle bus which takes just under 10 minutes to reach Rhoose Cardiff International Airport railway station. From here there is a train every hour to Cardiff Central. The journey time on the train is about 35 minutes. Additionally, the 304 bus operates hourly services, calling at the airport, to Cardiff city centre. The journey time is around an hour and a half.
